Wikia Disscussion Thread

The bad thing about a Wikia is that you can only do one page at a time which is VERY time consuming. You also can only see one page or category at a time so this thread will be here to show you what we need and don't need currently.

http://loy.wikia.com/wiki/Legends_of_Yore_Wiki

Link in case no one have it already. FEEL FREE TO EDIT! create pages that don't exist. I don't mind coming behind someone to edit. It mostly just the act of starting the page that cause me problems. If you don't know something like how much Health a Chaos Knight have then leave a question mark. Don't assume anything. Fun fact, bears have 1 point in zen and rage and so do bandits. I am able to look at the coding to get all of the details.

What I currently don't want:
NPCs
Areas
Ideas/fan fictions

We will add NPCs and areas later but currently they just take up too much time for so little. If you want to know that Wild Dogs can be found in the Wilderness then look at the Wild Dog article or go and look for yourself. Most maps are not worth making a page over.

To-Do-List
*Personal* I will redo the Graveyard and Aria dungeons personally, I found the files hold a lot of juicy details that players might find neat. I will also do the other dungeons...The hard part is finding a format that I will like.
Towns: Have Aria but need the other two done in the same format. Thinking about removing all of the shop info as most shops (as far as I know) sell the same thing for the same price.
Monsters: (Don't worry about the 128x128 picture, just get the sprite image for now)
Goblin
Skull
Imp
Robber
Ettin
Ettin Guard
Ettin Mage
Creeper
Dark Mage
Arch Mage
Merc

Widow

Someone did Liche & Ghoul. Very grateful though the user hardly put anything (which is good as I quickly edited it, better to have question marks then false information) but I have a feeling I will have to go back and edit the monsters later. Kev not only have potions flooding the chests with blue potions but he also have some of the monsters drop them 100% of the time.

Still gotta do the dungeons. Good news is that I done working on the computer so I now have some free time to do so.

while i like the idea of a LoY wiki, the wikia format is ugly and unintuitive. maybe i'm used to being spoonfed, but i'm used to formatted wiki like the Minecraft wiki.

i find a good way to show the difference between great and not-so-good is with the Terraria wiki. have a look at the official wiki, and then compare it to the wikia wiki, and i'm sure you'll agree that the wikia category system is not the better one.

having said that, i'm not here to bash you - i want to help build a better wiki. are you still maintaining the wikia? i'm going to look into how wikia works and get back to you with any useful information i find.

I think the wiki idea is kinda foolhardy, especially when beetlebon's archive is around which pretty much is as useful as one would expect the wiki to be if not more so. It also updates automatically which the wiki, as we can all see, does not.

do you mean this thing here?

i agree that it will always be up-to-date, but it's visually jarring and difficult to understand. the idea of a wiki is to provide the information in an easy-to-read format, with links to and from all related information. i would very much rather use a wiki.

I'm still pretty apathetic towards the idea. When I use a wiki I do so for information, at the rate this game is being developed, any such information will be fully available on beetlebon's site and from there it may take up to several weeks to be transferred to the wiki. It just doesn't seem so efficient to me.

it seems the wiki isn't being updated, has it been abandoned? it's missing many key features as well. as i want to completely restructure it, i'll leave this thread alone for a while, and if i'm still interested i'll either rebuild it or start a new one.

How is it 'jarring' or 'difficult to understand'? :(

If users feel this then I would appreciate any feedback on how to improve the the tool.

If I may say so myself - my tool is probably the best source of information about the game, other than this forum, unless you like reading the game files directly.

Cheers,

Mon

sorry, i wasn't intending to be insulting. it seems others don't appreciate the need for a wiki, so let me explain:

the "visually jarring" is in reference to your choice of colors. most of the internet is black and dark colors on white. when i look at your page for too long and switch to another tab, it makes me see lines. it also tires my eyes out.

the "difficult to understand" requires a bit more explaining. i find examples are the best way to do that.

example:
"where do i find the Giant Stinger for the Nasty Sting quest?"

using Game File Analyser:
1. using search, input "nasty sting" > no results
2. look in Quest table, wonder what "L45 | tor4 | tor5" means, click on it
3. nothing appears to have happened. scroll down, oh there's some stuff.
4. alot of useless information. i see a scorpion sprite, it looks like it has the giant stinger. click on giant scorpion to find out where it might be.
5. nothing about where it's found, just a bunch of mostly useless data

using a wiki:
1. using search, input "nasty sting"
2. using quest page, it tells you the giant scorpion has the item, so you click on the giant scorpion link that's provided
3. the giant scorpion page tells you where it's located and the conditions required to find it

i must apologize again - i don't want to come off as sounding like i'm being mean; i'm trying to be honest about a general user's experience. i'm positive that your file analyser can't replace the ease-of-use of a wiki. it certainly provides a WEALTH of information in an easier format to read than looking through the source files, but that's not what i'm discussing in this thread.

there are many other things i would want to search on that i can't easily find the answer to by looking directly at the data; again, wiki are made to take away any user processing, and give the answers directly.

oh i absolutely agree. that's an inherent problem with all wiki that aren't given information before the release. that doesn't stop me from wanting a wiki, though :D
